Statement

Well Behaved Dogs on Transit – You shouldn’t need a car to get around town with your best friend. OneCity will use our relationships with TransLink to champion an off-peak, leashed dog ridership pilot on the SkyTrain and SeaBus. The pilot will include clear behaviour rules, desig- nated boarding areas, and retained operator discretion, the same way Toronto and European cities already do it on their transit systems. If it works well for dogs and humans, we’ll expand it. Legalize Bodega Cats – New York City’s famous bodega cats are a vital part of pest control and a beloved part of neighbourhood life. Here in Vancouver, they’re illegal. OneCity will start a certified “Working Cat Program” and work with Vancouver Coastal Health to model Chicago’s and New York’s approach to bodega cats in small shops across the city. Under the program, cats will be vaccinated and kept away from open food preparation. They’ll provide a chemical-free means of pest control, and a genuine piece of neighbourhood life for our small shops. Give Young People Their First Good Job – Youth unemployment in Canada is at 14.3%, and Vancouver is one of the most expensive places anywhere to start your career. We’ll help by creating up to 375 youth-only positions a year, paid a living wage, giving young people a chance and a strong foundation for work in the future. These jobs will be supported by the City and designed to complement the adult workforce, not undercut it. The program would have three streams: direct youth hiring in areas it already controls like parks, community centres, summer camps, and administrative or digital support roles. Second, we will create a living-wage top-up fund for community employers that hire young people with federal Canada Summer Jobs funding. Finally, we will create youth employment grants for organizations that can provide meaningful paid work but cannot absorb the full cost of hiring, including non-profits, BIAs, neighbourhood houses, food security organizations, childcare pro- viders, and community groups.
