Statement

Build those spaces into a real citywide wildlife corridor. These changes will mean Vancouver becomes more resilient to flooding and severe climate events. We’ll do all of it in formal partnership with the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. Grow the Canopy, Cool the City – We’ll bring urban heat down by updating the Urban Forest Strategy with an ambitious goal: tree canopy covering at least 40% of the city by 2050 or sooner. Canopy coverage above 40% offers greater cooling certainty, climate adaptation, and ecological resiliency and protects more communities from the worst impacts of the climate crisis. Evergreen Funding for Parks – For four years, Vancouver’s democratically-elected Park Board has endured unprecedented attacks on its authority. OneCity supports our democratic Park Board and will move to empower it with Evergreen Funding, so it can be more insulated from the political whims of City Hall. With our Evergreen Park Board Funding Plan, Park Board reve- nue will be set up for long-term stability. We’ll start with changes that cost nothing and need no new fees, like letting the Park Board keep the revenue it already earns, instead of losing it to general city coffers; and pursuing the federal and provincial grants that are already available and yet unclaimed. Then, the OneCity Park Board Team will advocate for longer-term tools, including a sponsor- ship policy consistent with Vancouverites’ values, and durable revenue mechanisms built for the long run. As an early, low-cost proof point, OneCity will explore a pilot of Park Board-run gift shops in select parks and community spaces. The shops will create jobs, keep revenue in-house, and give Vancouverites a way to support the parks they love without fee hikes.
